2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible
2013 Ford Shelby GT500 -- a 650-horsepower beast of a Mustang -- Ford has made it clear it has no intention of ceding any ground to Chevy and its super Camaro ZL1. And unlike the ZL1, Ford is already prepping a 2013 GT500 Convertible, which it’s showing off at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show. Ford is also using Chicago to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its Special Vehicles Team.
Not surprisingly, the GT500 convertible has the same powertrain and underpinnings as the hardtop: a new supercharged 5.8-liter V-8, up from 5.4 liters in the old car, that produces 650 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque, sending its power to the rear wheels by way of a six-speed manual transmission and carbon-fiber driveshaft. The V-8 benefits from go-fast tweaks like high-lift camshafts, while the drivetrain scores a stronger clutch and transmission gears. The current 2012 GT500 by comparison offers 550 hp and 510 lb-ft.
